I love, love, love running in our amazing Kansas City community. The people are amazing, and we have awesome running opportunities for runners who may be looking for a variety of experiences. Here is a guide to best of KC fall racing. (IMO)
Competitive racing- Plaza 10k
- Hands down, if you are looking for a well run, competitive race right here in Kansas City, Plaza 10k is the event for you. This race brings in a deep competitive field, quality crowd support and superb race day management by KC Running company. I absolutely love that fast and flat course. Somehow this race always brings in excellent weather too. This is a great an excellent race to kick of your fall racing calendar. While this years event has already passed, you should go ahead and pencil this race in for next year. This may be my favorite race of the year in KC.
Biggest Racing Event in KC-Kansas City Marathon present by Garmin
- This is the ONLY marathon race I will run in Kansas City, and the race offers distances for all. I was excited to complete my first marathon locally, at KC marathon in 2015, and earn my first Boston Qualifier. KC marathon offers a 5k, 10k, half marathon and marathon distances. Race director Dave works year round to put on this awesome event. I love that he doesn’t default to doing the same ol’ each year. Every year under his leadership, promises new exciting changes and improvement. I look forward to KC Marathon drawing more and more out of town runners as this event continues to grow. This event also offers a “kids marathon.” Kiddos can log their first 25 through the summer and fall training seasons and then complete the last 1.2 on race day. As a teacher and coach I love giving these kids this opportunity!
Family fun- Monster Dash 5K
- This event is great for the whole family! Offering a kids fun run, costume contest and 5k race its fun for all. This race has an evening start time, which is a big perk for this non-morning person. The event continues to grow, adding in a third location this year. With events held in Witchita, Lee’s Summit and Overland Park, you can participate in one, or all three! If you are looking for the dark and spooky night time experience, the Overland Park event is your best choice, and my favorite location amongst the three.
Late season goal race-Longview half marathon
- If you are looking to get the most out of your fall fitness, you will want to add Longview to your race calendar. This race is perfectly timed to pair with pretty much any goal race on this calendar list. Did you run an awesome Plaza 10k, then this race is timed perfect for a PR or first time half marathon. Did you train hard for KC marathon/half marathon? Then piggy back all that training with a second race. Longview is featuring a new course this year, that looks like a great opportunity to chase some new PRs. Longview offers distances of 5k,10K and of course Half marathon. The half marathon offers a neat addition of the race with in a race. With the possibility of some cooler weather, I recommend checking out the VIP package.
There are so many great races right here in Kansas City. These are just my personal faves. So KC, what are you favorite events happening this fall?
